Background

The ResilienceLab project aims to develop climate-resilient solutions for urban and rural areas, whilst at the same time strengthening the skills of the next generation of professionals in tackling complex challenges. The focus is on the effects of climate change – in particular extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and periods of drought – and their impact on infrastructure, the environment and society.

At the heart of the project is the creation of an interdisciplinary research space (‘Sponge Lab’), where innovative approaches to water management, digitalisation and sustainable urban development are explored in a practical context and brought to life. To this end, ‘sponge’ elements such as green roofs, rainwater storage systems and green facades will be fitted with sensors and digitally monitored to develop data-driven solutions for climate-adapted water management.

Another key focus is on the development of novel, textile-based green facades using sustainable materials. These help to improve the microclimate, reduce heat island effects and enhance resource efficiency. At the same time, digital technologies such as the IoT, AI and digital twins are being integrated to better understand and control complex systems.

The project combines research, teaching and knowledge transfer: early-career researchers and students acquire practical skills for climate-sensitive and resource-conscious action. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative learning formats, solutions are developed that contribute to the long-term sustainable transformation of cities and regions.
