Background
The goal of the "Sustainable Growth Media for Hydroponics Based on Circularly Needled Natural Materials" (NaWaruN) project is to develop an innovative substrate for cultivating crops in commercial hydroponic systems. The substrate is based on tubular sections made of circularly needled sheep's wool, with the optional addition of natural additives. Circular needling is a process in which fibers are needled around a central mandrel. This creates a mechanically stable tube with varying radial densities, which can be used in different lengths to suit various growing periods. At the inwa laboratories, these tubular sections undergo physicochemical characterization and are evaluated for their fundamental suitability as growing media. At the Schinner horticultural nursery, suitable sections are tested and optimized for commercial application. This enables crop production that is peat-free and efficient in terms of labor, water, and nutrient use, while also reducing crop losses caused by drying out or pest infestations. Avoiding various environmental impacts serves as a strong selling point. Once sold to end customers, the media are fully biodegradable.
