Background

Initial situation: All small-scale sewage treatment plants, regardless of type and manufacturer, must be maintained to ensure proper operation. The frequency of maintenance is stipulated by law in Annex 1 of the Wastewater Ordinance and depends on the specific treatment capacity of the small-scale sewage treatment plant. The standard maintenance interval for an (analogue) small-scale sewage treatment plant is between 4 and 6 months. Systems currently available on the market lack the capability to intelligently analyse collected data, automatically detect anomalies and predict the operational status of small wastewater treatment plants in order to schedule maintenance intervals as required.

Objectives

The aim of the project is to develop and implement an innovative monitoring and maintenance system for small sewage treatment plants to collect and analyse measurement data using the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), thereby enabling 24/7 remote monitoring of the performance of decentralised small sewage treatment plants as well as maintenance tailored to actual needs.
