Background
Climate change is also leading to an increase in extreme weather events in Germany and Europe. Heatwaves, prolonged periods of drought and heavy rainfall all place a strain on both people and the environment.
Various individual measures, such as soil moisture monitoring and air quality monitoring, as well as local action plans (see, for example, the City of Ingolstadt’s Heat Action Plan), show that options for action already exist; however, these are often local in scope, not necessarily linked to one another, and frequently expensive.
This project aims to develop and test a multi-functional, modularly expandable, customisable and networked environmental sensor unit (‘Climate-Cube’) using cost-effective standard components. The assembly instructions, parts lists and code snippets (sensor libraries, dashboard, etc.) will be published and are intended, amongst other things, to be replicated, further developed and operated in a networked manner by schools and ‘makers’. The data collected is intended to be analysable both locally and centrally, and can thus be used to derive local measures (e.g. watering recommendations for urban trees) as well as for large-scale forecasts (e.g. ‘drought progression’, flood situations, …) can be scientifically analysed.
