→ More about the Institute

Research Areas

The Institute for Sustainable Water Systems conducts research in the fields of sponge cities, photonics, and food production, as well as sustainability and digitalization. A key focus is on transferring research findings into practice, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises and municipalities.

Founding and Development

The Institute for Sustainable Water Systems at Hof University was established in March 2023 as an independent institute, having emerged from the predecessor Institute for Water and Energy Management. With four research groups and around 15 scientific staff, the focus is on applied research and innovation development in the water sector for industry and municipalities.

Goal

The research activities focus on applied innovation development and transfer tasks with partners from commerce and industry as well as municipalities and cities – nationally and internationally. For specific focus topics such as trace substance removal from wastewater, dedicated research networks exist.

Competence and Transfer Centre for Sustainable Sponge City and Region

The goals and tasks of the Competence and Transfer Centre for Sustainable Sponge City and Region (ktns) reflect the diverse needs of municipalities, specialist engineers, architects, and urban planners that were expressed in response to the challenges of climate change impacts within the SPORE project and the certificate course "The Path to the Sponge City – Urban Development in Times of Climate Change".

Knowledge Storage and Transfer

Collecting existing knowledge on sponge cities/sponge regions in a web-based knowledge repository and practical transfer through training and similar formats.

Consulting & Coaching

With the second focus, we form the link between solutions from the knowledge repository and their preliminary assessment for implementation by planning offices.
