The aim of the project "Sustainable growth media for hydroponics based on round-needled natural materials" (NaWaruN) is to develop an innovative substrate that can be used to cultivate crops in commercially operated hydroponic systems. The basis for this will be tubular sections of round-needled sheep's wool, with the optional addition of natural additives. Round needling is a process in which fibres are needled around a stitch mandrel. The result is a mechanically stabilised tube with radially different densities, which can be used in different lengths for different cultivation periods. The round needle tube sections are physico-chemically characterised by inwa in the laboratories and tested for their basic suitability as planting media. At the Schinner horticultural farm, the suitable pipe cuttings for commercial use are examined and optimised. The plants can thus be produced peat-free, labour-efficient, water-efficient, nutrient-efficient and with lower failure rates due to drought or pest infestation. A wide range of environmental impacts are avoided, which is a strong selling point. The media are fully biodegradable after sale to end customers.
The research here is tough.
