CataVolt

Energy-efficient treatment of domestic grey water by coupling photovoltaic modules with photocatalytically active coated, three-dimensional structures of the light trap

Support programme

The joint project "CataVolt" - "Energy-efficient treatment of domestic grey water by coupling photovoltaic modules with photocatalytically active coated, three-dimensional structures of the light trap" is funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation as a pioneering technology in the field of water purification.

Objective

The content of the joint project is the intramodular linking of photovoltaic energy generation and photocatalytic processes in water treatment. The aim here is to utilise existing synergies with regard to usable radiation frequencies and thermal sinks by developing modularly expandable and optically adapted catalyst structures. This approach enables the additive installation of decentralised systems for solar photocatalytic water purification without the otherwise significant competition for space with solar power and heat generation. The application scenario addressed here is the wet-chemical oxidation of domestic grey water with the aim of producing service water for drinking water substitution or in the context of the Schammstadt concept. The utilisation of highly reactive radical species enables the holistic removal of chemical and biological contaminants (e.g. drug residues, household chemicals, viruses, bacteria).
