Goal & Result

Initial situation

Due to climate change, extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall and dry periods will occur more frequently in the future. This means that the way we handle water as a resource must be rethought.

Understanding water cycles

Meaningful storage, controlled forwarding and coordinated distribution are becoming increasingly important in order to avoid damage. To develop these measures and use them in the right place, an understanding of the water cycle and of how water behaves in different situations is needed.

Experimental setup

With the Schwammstation, we create an experimental setup that makes this knowledge tangible. Different solution approaches can be reproduced experimentally and assessed at an early stage.

Knowledge transfer

Students, participants in further education programmes and the public can gain insight into the complex interrelationships of a sponge city through courses, demonstrations and lectures.
