Environmental education: Fish and vegetables at school

Support programme

This project was funded as an environmental education project by the "Intensification of Environmental Education in Bavaria" funding programme of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection.

Objective

The environmental education project as part of the "Intensification of Environmental Education in Bavaria" funding programme of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection showed pupils from Upper Franconia in this participatory project the possibilities of sustainable and future-oriented production of aquatic foods, such as fish, from aquaponics. Aquaponics is a compound word and combines the production of Aqua-culture and hydroponics. Aquaculture provides fish and hydroponic crops as food for humans. The students learnt in theory and practice how this culture works. The practical part included, for example, responsibility for maintaining an aquaponics system.
