4th Hof Water Symposium

15 & 16 October 2024
Securing water resources in times of drought
Active design, interactive, networking, sustainable.

What is the Hof Water Symposium?

"The Hof Water Symposium is a specialist symposium with an integrated exhibition aimed at specialists from the water management sector. These can be those responsible for drinking water supply or wastewater disposal, as well as those who shape our water management through their technology or software, for example - i.e. service providers, planners or equipping companies. Representatives of public authorities and people from scientific institutions are also very welcome. The aim of every Hof Water Symposium is to offer an innovative concept In 2024, participants will be actively involved in shaping the content on the key topic of securing water resources in times of drought. Take advantage of the 4th Hof Water Symposium to be inspired, provide inspiration and perhaps even identify projects and get to know future cooperation partners."

Why "Securing water resources in times of drought?"

"Even though a lot of rain fell in the first half of 2024 and the critical situation of groundwater levels and soil moisture in the upper layers has obviously improved, the risk of a lack of availability for many water resources in times of drought remains. The consequences of a seasonal shift in precipitation are becoming increasingly visible. Summer droughts are becoming longer, groundwater recharge in summer is continuing to decline, which is exacerbated by the reduced infiltration of heavy rainfall through dried-out soils, especially after longer dry periods. On the other hand, we need more greenery in the cities, and agriculture and forestry will have to be increasingly irrigated in the future, which means that the increasing demand for water represents a further stress factor. Last but not least, low water levels in our water bodies are increasing the pressure on water management to ensure that all water-related requirements are met in sufficient quantity and quality on a permanent basis.

Prof Günter Müller-Czygan and Prof Dr Manuela Wimmer, Head and Deputy Head of inwa

Numerous initiatives by the federal states, the federal government and also at EU level are addressing the issue of securing water resources for the future from different perspectives against the backdrop of the increasing effects of climate change. In addition, there are many new technical and organisational impulses from industry and science to deal with water more efficiently, to increase multiple use or to develop alternative water resources. Although many solutions are available, the road to practical implementation is still rocky and requires faster realisation in view of the increasing risks. As the organisers of public water supply and wastewater disposal, cities and municipalities are at the forefront of this process and require an effective transfer of innovation to the respective local situation. At the same time, possible solutions and measures for securing water resources, especially in times of drought, must be integrated as a suitable component in the ever-increasing variety of municipal tasks. At the 4th Hof Water Symposium, experts from science, business and the municipal sector will discuss the various requirements for securing water resources in times of drought and how the associated multi-perspective practical transfer of innovations can succeed."
